Red Raiders slay Somerville 4-2

Playoff
opportunity still alive for Melrose
Larsen Arena– The Melrose Red Raiders
returned to their winning ways by defeating Somerville by a score of
4-2 in the “Viking Pride February Freeze Tournament” being sponsored
in Winthrop. The victory brought the Red Raider “Overall” record in
the Middlesex League Standings to 9-9-2 for 20 points, just one point
shy to qualify for the MIAA State Tournament. To lock in a playoff
slot Melrose will have to win or tie their final game of the season vs
Winthrop on the back end of the “freeze” tourney which will be held on
Friday February 20th at 7:30PM.
After getting behind 1-0 in a very
sluggish first period, Melrose countered with 3 second period goals.
Melrose started the second period with a 2 man advantage. Chris Powers
started the comeback when he fed Eric Farr with a great goalmouth pass
to tie the game about .40 seconds into the 2nd. Greg Porcaro gave
Melrose the lead when he backhanded a loose puck from the slot about 2
minutes later. The line of Farr, Chris Fimiani, and Peter Hanson
worked their zone well resulting in a great feed from Farr to Fimiani
who tipped it into the top corner for a 3-1 lead. Melrose let down
their guard with .01 seconds left in the second and Somerville cut the
lead to 3-2. The 3rd period was up and down until Melrose took a
penalty with 2:40 remaining.
With a man down, Chris Healy moved the
puck down the wing resulting in a 2 on 1 with Mike Darling. a great
feed from Healy to Darling resulted in a shorthanded tally which put
the game on ice. Melrose will play Winthrop for the Championship on
Friday. Withrop defeated Plymouth South in overtime 2-1 to reach the
finals.
